Many elderly patients have medication issues

A survey conducted by the Shanghai Municipal Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring Center on 3352 elderly residents in Jinshan District showed a high prevalence of chronic diseases among the elderly population. 91.56% of the elderly in the district had taken medication within the year, and 78.16% had taken medication within 30 days of the survey. However, the elderly showed various problems in their medication process, such as not inquiring about the source of the drugs.
Experts analyzed that the most worrying aspect is that the elderly do not pay attention to the source of the drugs. A considerable number of people take leftover drugs or drugs given by relatives and friends, which poses a hidden danger to safe medication. Only 40% of the elderly pay attention to the manufacturer, approval number, and batch number of the drugs during medication, while about 60% do not pay attention to these aspects.
In the survey, the collected incidence of adverse drug reactions was low, which fully illustrates the lack of understanding of adverse drug reactions among the elderly. Antibiotics and antipyretics and analgesics were the drugs with more adverse drug events. The most common adverse reactions were skin rashes and gastrointestinal reactions.
Statistics show that the elderly in this district have a relatively low level of education, with 80.9% having a junior high school education or below, and 29.9% being illiterate or semi-illiterate. They are mainly factory workers engaged in agriculture, animal husbandry, and fishery. The level of education has a great impact on health status and correct medication. The generally low level of education will directly affect correct medication and lead to adverse reactions.
