Patients with gastric ulcers should use cold medicine with caution

For ordinary patients, cold medicine can effectively alleviate their discomfort; however, patients with pre-existing gastrointestinal diseases, especially peptic ulcers, should not take cold medicine on an empty stomach when they have a cold. They should consult a doctor and choose cold medicine that is less irritating to the gastrointestinal tract.
This is because some cold medicines can easily damage the gastric mucosa, and frequent use can cause gastrointestinal diseases to recur or induce gastrointestinal bleeding. Xu Le, chief physician of the gastroenterology department at Beijing Hospital, said that cold medicines with antipyretic and analgesic effects mainly contain non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, amidopyrine, paracetamol, aspirin vitamin C effervescent tablets, Tylenol, and Vc Yinqiao tablets, etc. Patients with ulcers should use the above-mentioned drugs with caution, because even small doses can cause gastrointestinal bleeding.
If you experience upper abdominal pain or indigestion during a cold, do not ignore it. Go to the hospital to check for peptic ulcers. If you already know you have ulcers, it is best to use cold medicine cautiously or not at all. Ulcer patients who have already taken cold medicine can take ulcer treatment drugs at the same time, such as Losec or Nexium, to prevent the cold medicine from irritating the stomach.
