According to Xinhua News Agency, London, December 16 (Reporter Ge Qiufang) - An international research team's study on laboratory mice shows that resveratrol, abundant in red wine, can improve energy consumption, preventing the mice from developing obesity and diabetes.

Resveratrol is found in peanuts and grape skins, with particularly high concentrations in red wine. Previously, scientists discovered that it can extend the lifespan of fruit flies by about 10 days, from an initial lifespan of only one month.

According to the Alpha Galileo science news website, run by the British Science Association, researchers from the Pasteur Institute in France, Harvard University in the United States, and the University of Kuopio in Finland found in their research that supplementing the diet of laboratory mice with resveratrol significantly impacted muscle development. Under the influence of resveratrol, muscle fibers consumed more oxygen, thus burning more energy both during exercise and at rest. The mice also exhibited remarkable endurance during exercise. Researchers found that resveratrol increases energy expenditure, making the body less prone to obesity.

Based on this research, the researchers have developed a related new drug and are preparing for clinical trials on diabetic patients.
