Which cold symptoms require attention?

After a cold, the body's resistance decreases, and bacteria often take advantage of this weakness. Therefore, if a fever persists for several days after a cold, and there is purulent sputum, a bacterial co-infection should be suspected. Seek medical attention promptly to prevent it from developing into bronchitis.

The symptoms of a cold are very similar to the initial symptoms of many diseases, but they are also distinctly different. Never be careless or negligent.

If there is a fever, along with severe nausea and vomiting that recurs, a brain disorder (such as meningitis) should be suspected. If there is a fever, along with an aversion to greasy foods and symptoms of nausea and vomiting, infectious hepatitis should be suspected.

The viruses that cause colds can sometimes cause myocarditis. Symptoms often appear a week after a cold, including palpitations, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and vague pain in the precordial area, especially if the heart rate exceeds 100 beats per minute. If the heartbeat is irregular, seek medical attention immediately.

If the onset is sudden, with chills followed by a high fever that doesn't subside (often above 39℃), body aches, loss of appetite, and similar symptoms in others around you, it may be influenza.

If a high fever persists, accompanied by difficulty breathing, severe cough, and cyanosis, pneumonia should be suspected.

In children, if they are crying, refusing to eat, have red and swollen throats, or even white pus spots, tonsillitis should be suspected. If a child develops a fever and, on the second day, small, red papules appear on the face and body, distributed densely and evenly, with a bright red tongue and a pale circle around the lips, it may be scarlet fever. If a rash appears on the fifth day of a fever, along with hepatosplenomegaly and altered mental state, it may be typhus.

If a fever occurs in the afternoon but not in the morning, accompanied by fatigue, dry cough, night sweats (cold sweats), and progressive weight loss, tuberculosis should be suspected.

In any of the above situations, seek medical attention promptly. Do not self-medicate.
