Sweet potato peels contain a relatively high amount of alkali, and excessive consumption can cause gastrointestinal discomfort. Sweet potato peels that are brown or have black spots should not be eaten, as this indicates infection with black spot disease, which can cause poisoning if consumed.
Potato peels contain glycoalkaloids that are not beneficial to human health. These accumulate in the body, leading to cumulative poisoning. Because it is chronic poisoning, there may be no symptoms or the symptoms may be subtle, often going unnoticed. Potatoes that have sprouted or have a greenish skin contain even higher levels of toxins and should absolutely not be eaten.
Water chestnut peels: Because water chestnuts grow in fertile wetlands, their peels accumulate various harmful and toxic biological excretions and chemicals. Therefore, the peels should be removed before eating them, whether raw or cooked, to avoid unpredictable illnesses.
Persimmon peels: Because persimmon peels have a pleasant taste, people generally eat persimmons without spitting out the peels. However, medical research shows that when persimmons are unripe, the tannins that can harm the stomach and intestines are mainly present in the flesh. Once the persimmon ripens, the tannins concentrate in the peel.
