The Qinghai-Tibet Railway, the world's highest and longest plateau railway, has opened for operation. Yesterday, a reporter interviewed Guo Wanshou, a chief physician at the China-Japan Friendship Hospital who has made four medical aid trips to Tibet. Based on medical theory and his own experience, he offered advice to tourists on precautions to take when traveling to Tibet.
Clothing: Tibet has a large temperature difference between day and night. To prevent the most dangerous colds, you should bring several cotton clothes. In addition, rainproof clothing is also necessary. Bring extra underwear; water is not readily available in Tibet, so it is advisable to bring one or two packs of disposable underwear. You should also carry some medicines to deal with altitude sickness: painkillers for headaches, Bufening; Huangliansu and fluoroquinolones for diarrhea; sedatives and cold medicine for insomnia; eye drops; and cooling oil for heatstroke.
Food: Be sure not to overeat or eat too much at once, because the digestive function of the human body is reduced at high altitudes. Overeating or eating too much will increase the burden on the digestive organs. Do not smoke or drink alcohol. Eat plenty of vegetables and fruits rich in vitamins. Sugars can improve tolerance to hypoxia; when first arriving at high altitudes, eat some high-sugar, low-fat, and moderately protein-rich foods. When eating in Tibet, the dietary principle of "eat well in the morning, eat full at noon, eat less in the evening, and eat light and less greasy" is the most suitable.
Accommodation: On the first day in Tibet, avoid being overly excited and prioritize rest. It is advisable to go to bed early. Avoid covering your head while sleeping. The room temperature should not be too high to avoid hypoxia. Hot water accelerates blood circulation and consumes a lot of oxygen. To avoid catching a cold and consuming energy, it is best not to wash your hair or bathe for the first three days in Tibet.
Travel: Do not overexert yourself at high altitudes. When you first get off the vehicle, try not to lift heavy luggage, try to walk and talk less to reduce metabolism, and absolutely do not run. Tourists generally begin to experience various reactions above 3000 meters above sea level. The most common altitude sickness is headache; others include nausea, insomnia, fatigue, and diarrhea. Pay attention to taking medicine promptly, resting appropriately, and quickly replenishing oxygen. Do not be too nervous; you will generally adapt within three days.
