Start of Autumn: August 7th (Gregorian calendar), July 14th (Lunar calendar).
After the Start of Autumn, many places have the custom of "adding autumn fat", but if you rush to replenish your body as soon as the Start of Autumn arrives, it will not only fail to achieve the desired effect but also cause many disadvantages. This is because, in the unbearably hot summer, people often suffer from varying degrees of weak spleen and stomach due to summer suffering or excessive consumption of cold drinks. If you consume a large amount of supplements at this time, especially overly greasy tonics for nourishing yin, it will further increase the burden on the spleen and stomach, making the gastrointestinal tract, which has been in a "weak" state for a long time, unable to withstand the "sudden" supplements, easily leading to digestive disorders. Therefore, before replenishing in autumn, it is important to first regulate the spleen and stomach to prepare for better acceptance of supplements in autumn and winter.
In most parts of China, for a long time after the Start of Autumn, the temperature is usually high, and the air humidity is also high. Under such climatic conditions, the regulation of the spleen and stomach should focus on clearing heat, removing dampness, and strengthening the spleen. It is advisable to eat more mung beans, adzuki beans, and coix seed to eliminate damp-heat from the urine and promote the recovery of spleen and stomach function. Secondly, the regulation of the spleen and stomach should also vary from person to person. Specifically, the following three types of people should pay special attention:
First, patients with spleen deficiency. People with spleen deficiency often exhibit symptoms such as poor appetite, abdominal distension, loss of appetite, fatigue, occasional diarrhea, and pale complexion. Before replenishing, these individuals may consider eating some foods that strengthen the spleen and stomach to promote the recovery of spleen and stomach function, such as tuckahoe cakes, water chestnut, yam, cowpea, and millet, which are all good choices. Congee can harmonize the stomach, replenish the spleen, and moisten dryness. Therefore, if the above foods are used to cook congee, the effect is even better.
Second, those with excessive stomach fire. People who habitually consume spicy and greasy foods tend to generate heat and fire over time, accumulating heat in the intestines and stomach, manifesting as burning sensation in the stomach, preference for cold drinks, bad breath, and constipation. Before replenishing, these individuals must pay attention to clearing the stomach fire. Appropriately consume more bitter melon, cucumber, winter melon, bitter greens, and kudzu tea, and then replenish after the stomach fire subsides.
Third, the elderly and children. Due to their weaker digestive abilities, they often have food stagnation in their stomachs, manifesting as poor appetite or abdominal distension after meals. Therefore, before replenishing, they should focus on digesting food and harmonizing the stomach. They may consider eating an appropriate amount of hawthorn and white radish, which have the effects of digesting food, strengthening the spleen, and harmonizing the stomach. For severe cases, they can take Bahe Wan or Xiangsha Yangwei Wan under the guidance of a doctor.
Except for those with yang deficiency, avoid excessive consumption of warm foods or medicines, such as mutton, dog meat, ginseng, antler, cassia bark, and aconite, otherwise it is very easy to aggravate autumn dryness.
