Experts say that calcium and zinc supplements for children should be given under the guidance of a doctor.

Parents go to great lengths to ensure their children's health and intelligence, focusing on calcium and zinc supplementation. Experts advise that nutrient supplementation should follow a principle of supplementing what is lacking, and that vitamin D should not be taken excessively, as overconsumption can lead to toxicity.
A recent survey of 100,000 women and children in Tianjin showed that 81.1% of parents believe that children in their growth and development stages lack calcium, and 78.3% believe that taking vitamin D is beneficial for children's development and should be increased.
Experts point out that parents have serious misconceptions about whether their children lack calcium. Evidence of calcium deficiency is necessary; a doctor's judgment based on the child's symptoms, signs, and test results should be followed. Only children who truly lack calcium should take calcium supplements under a doctor's guidance, with the doctor determining the type, dosage, and administration method.
In addition, many children dislike calcium tablets, so some parents mix them with sugary water, milk, or food. Experts warn that mixing calcium supplements with sugary water, food, or milk reduces absorption.
The survey showed that 67.6% of parents believe that a child's poor appetite indicates zinc deficiency and requires additional supplementation.
Experts explain that poor appetite and low food intake in children are often caused by various factors, such as iron deficiency anemia, indigestion, recovery from certain infectious diseases, and poor eating habits. Therefore, for children who eat little or have difficulty eating, multiple causes should be investigated, and zinc supplementation is only suitable for children who are zinc deficient.
