Spring Climate Characteristics and Disease Prevention

Wang Anshi's Song Dynasty poem, “Spring breezes are sometimes kind, sometimes unkind; without spring breezes, flowers won't bloom, but blooming flowers are blown away,” vividly depicts the characteristics of early spring weather. Spring is a season of fluctuating temperatures, with the greatest temperature variations, the most unstable balance between warmth and cold, and frequent winds.

The sudden changes in temperature during spring cause a decrease in human immunity and defense functions. The noise produced by howling north winds not only has an extremely adverse effect on the central nervous system, but the strong winds also lead to dry weather, causing dry lips, dry nasopharyngeal mucosa, and decreased respiratory resistance. At this time, bacteria, viruses, and other pathogenic microorganisms that begin to proliferate after "hibernation" will take the opportunity to wreak havoc. Therefore, spring is the season most susceptible to influenza, epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis, mumps, scarlet fever, chickenpox, rubella, and other diseases. Such unpredictable weather, with sudden temperature drops or sharp increases in atmospheric pressure, can also easily cause autonomic nervous system disorders, leading to vasoconstriction, increased blood pressure, and increased blood viscosity, thus easily inducing strokes, angina pectoris, and myocardial infarction.

The windy weather of spring, with its warm temperatures and abundant flowers, carries various pollen grains, poplar catkins, dust, dust mites, and fungi in the air. Therefore, it is most likely to induce allergic reactions in people with allergic constitutions, causing allergic dermatitis, allergic rhinitis, asthma, and urticaria. People with allergic constitutions, especially those with a history of the above diseases, should always pay attention to staying away from allergens.

The changeable temperature, air pressure, and temperature characteristics of spring make people's emotions active and change accordingly. It is easy to experience depression, sadness, and helplessness. People with a history of mental illnesses such as schizophrenia are particularly sensitive to this type of weather and are prone to relapse. Statistics show that March to May is the period with the highest relapse rate of mental illness, hence the saying, “Spring arrives, and the madmen stir.”

In spring, the body's metabolism is vigorous, appetite increases, and the secretion of gastric acid and other gastric juices increases. Coupled with the unstable emotions of spring, it is easy to cause autonomic nervous system dysfunction, thus easily causing the recurrence of diseases such as gastric ulcers.

In addition, spring is also a high-incidence season for nosebleeds, hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, tuberculosis, and infectious hepatitis A, and prevention and treatment should be given attention.

In short, the changeable spring weather has a significant impact on both the physiological and psychological processes of people. Therefore, in spring, special attention should be paid to adapting to the changes in the climate. Pay attention to adding or removing clothing as needed. Elderly, frail, and multi-morbid individuals should not remove their winter clothes too early to avoid catching a cold. The diet should be light, nutritious, and easy to digest, avoiding greasy, fried, and spicy foods. One should also participate in more outdoor activities, go to bed early and wake up early, to adapt to the vibrant characteristics of spring and maintain physical and mental health.
