Three key points for health preservation in spring

Traditional Chinese medicine believes that the human body is closely related to nature. As stated in the "Su Wen - Bao Ming Quan Xing Lun": "Humans are born from the qi of heaven and earth, and their form is completed by the laws of the four seasons." The "Si Qi Diao Shen Da Lun" states: "The yin and yang of the four seasons are the root of all things. Therefore, the sage cultivates yang in spring and summer, and yin in autumn and winter, following their root, thus rising and falling with all things in the gate of growth." To live well in the natural environment, one must understand the laws and characteristics of the changes in yin and yang of the four seasons, and use certain health-preserving methods to maintain and strengthen the body's yin-yang balance to adapt to them.

Among the four seasons, the changing climate of spring's warmth, summer's heat, autumn's coolness, and winter's cold is a clear natural law. People should adapt and follow it, thus leading to different health-preserving methods for each season. In spring, the spring order is "fa chen" (to sprout and unfold). That is to say, in spring, all things in nature show a scene of vigorous growth and prosperity. Wang Bing said: "The spring yang rises, qi subtly disperses, giving birth to all things, showing their forms, hence it is called fa chen." Therefore, spring health preservation should mainly focus on the following three aspects:

Regulate the spirit to ensure "zhi sheng" (vitality of spirit)

"Zhi" refers to intention and spirit. In spring, one's intention should respond to the sprouting qi, with a cheerful spirit, smooth emotions, a broad mind, and avoidance of anger. Especially for the elderly, if they do not often feel angry or resentful and maintain an optimistic attitude, their essence and qi will not be easily dissipated, their organs will not easily age, and their bodies will not be weakened, thus naturally warding off illness and prolonging life.

  Activity to replenish vitality

Life lies in movement. Movement nourishes the body, and activity keeps the blood flowing. Regular activity and appropriate exercise are the secrets to longevity throughout history. However, "movement" can be active or passive. To respond to the vitality of spring, one should primarily engage in active and persistent exercise, such as taking a walk or jogging in the courtyard in the morning, as the "Nei Jing" says: In the three months of spring, one should "sleep late and wake early, and take long walks in the courtyard." Sun Simiao, a famous longevity physician in ancient China, pointed out: "The way to cultivate life is to always want a little labor." Avoid excessive activity to prevent excessive sweating, which can damage the body's yang qi and contradict the principle of "cultivating yang in spring and summer".

  Relaxation benefits "fa chen"

Winter passes and spring arrives, the spring yang rises, heaven and earth are born together, and all things flourish. The human body is the same; the liver yang rises, qi and blood circulate, and the spirit is active, only then can one start anew, with nourishment continuously supplied and functions constantly renewed. Therefore, in accordance with the spring qi, people must relax their bodies, "bei fa huan xing" (a phrase from the "Nei Jing", meaning to loosen clothes and let the hair down, etc.), so that the body is relaxed, qi and blood are not congested, and the internal organs can function normally.

In short, spring health preservation should follow this principle: when something is born, help it to grow and do not let it be destroyed; when something is given, always give it and do not let it be robbed; when something is rewarded, follow one's interests and do not punish it. As the saying goes, "Give birth and do not kill, give and do not rob, reward and do not punish. This is the way to cultivate life in response to the spring qi."
