Similar to ultraviolet radiation, car exhaust, and smoking, working overnight carries a potential risk of causing cancer. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the World Health Organization (WHO), will classify overnight shift work as a "probable carcinogen".
The report states that a relatively high cancer incidence rate does not prove that working overnight "causes" cancer, but scientists suspect that working overnight poses health risks because it disrupts the body's biological clock, and melatonin, a hormone that inhibits tumor production in the body, is generally secreted at night.
