Band-aids have become a household essential, but not everyone knows how to use them correctly. "Band-aids shouldn't be seen as a cure-all; they don't have any anti-inflammatory properties." A surgeon from Xinqiao Hospital of the Third Military Medical University reminds us that band-aids primarily absorb exudates and keep wounds dry. After an injury, patients should pay attention to the following when using band-aids.

First, the wound length shouldn't exceed the width of the band-aid. "Band-aids are mainly used for hemostasis in acute minor wounds, especially for clean, superficial, small cuts with neat incisions that don't require stitches." The surgeon from Xinqiao Hospital says that band-aids shouldn't be used for deeper wounds, wounds with major blood vessel, nerve, or tendon damage, or wounds suspected of containing foreign objects; they are also unsuitable for boils, burns, purulent infections, and various skin diseases.

Second, the wound needs to be disinfected first. The surgeon from Xinqiao Hospital says that before using a band-aid, you should carefully check the wound for any remaining debris. If there is any dirt, the wound should be cleaned and dried with saline, iodine glycerin applied, and then the band-aid applied. If the wound is caused by a rusty object, tetanus antitoxin should be injected first, and slight pressure should be applied when applying the band-aid to help stop bleeding.

Third, protect the wound. The surgeon from Xinqiao Hospital says that after applying a band-aid, patients should protect the wound, avoid active bleeding, meaning minimal movement of the injured area, keep it dry, and avoid contamination; don't constantly press on the wound, and avoid bumping or hitting it to prevent it from reopening.

Finally, observe the wound for changes. "After applying a band-aid, you should also observe the wound for changes, change it regularly, and prevent infection and suppuration." The surgeon from Xinqiao Hospital says that if the wound becomes more painful after 24 hours with a band-aid, or if there is exudate, it should be opened and checked; if redness, swelling, or other signs of infection are found, the band-aid should be removed, and a doctor should be consulted immediately.
