Recently, Ms. Huang, a resident of Gulou District, Fuzhou City, encountered a problem: she couldn't use air conditioning. Whenever she did, a small red rash would appear on her skin, sometimes developing into large, itchy welts. She asked her doctor if she was allergic to cold air. After allergy testing, the doctor discovered her allergy was caused by dust mites.
Ms. Huang was puzzled. She said she was very clean, frequently cleaning her home, which was always spotless. How could there be dust mites? In fact, the dust mites causing Ms. Huang's allergy came from the air conditioner. Since the summer began, there has been a significant increase in skin disease patients due to dust mites.
Most air conditioners work by drawing in indoor air, passing it through the evaporator, and then blowing it back into the room. Rooms with air conditioners rarely have windows open for ventilation. This environment is ideal for dust mite growth. With prolonged air conditioner use, dust mites, dust, dirt, and bacteria originally floating in the air accumulate inside the unit. If the air conditioner isn't cleaned regularly, the dust mites and harmful microorganisms like fungi on the filter will be circulated into the room with the air, leading to further mite and fungi proliferation. If someone stands directly beneath the air conditioner, they will be exposed to a much higher concentration of dust mites, causing allergic dermatitis.
How can we stay cool in the summer while minimizing dust mite exposure? First, the air conditioner filter should be cleaned weekly, or at least bi-weekly. Soak and wash the filter with household detergent or 84 disinfectant in warm water, then rinse thoroughly and air dry. Second, avoid standing directly in front of the air conditioner's air vents. Don't run the air conditioner for too long; turn it off after 1-3 hours and open windows for ventilation. Third, use wet cleaning methods for home and workplace cleaning to minimize dust. Finally, maintain good skin hygiene and frequently wash and sun-dry clothes and bedding.
