Heatstroke is a common pediatric disease, mostly occurring in areas south of the Yangtze River. To date, the etiology remains unclear, possibly related to the immature thermoregulatory center and imperfect thermoregulation function in infants and young children. A large amount of clinical data shows that heatstroke has the following characteristics:

  1. Due to poor self-regulation in infants and young children, heatstroke is more likely to occur before the age of 3.

  2. The onset is concentrated in June to August each year, the hottest months.

  3. Fever gradually appears in early summer, with the child's temperature ranging from 38-40.5℃. Body temperature rises at night and gradually decreases during the day. The fever may last for 1-2 months, but the child's general condition remains good.

  4. Polydipsia and polyuria; the child drinks no less than 3 liters of water per day and urinates more than 20 times a day.

  5. Oligohidrosis or anhidrosis; more than half of the children do not sweat, only sometimes sweating at the beginning of the illness or after the fever subsides.

  6. Treatment with various antibiotics is ineffective.

  7. After the autumn cooling, the child's body temperature mostly drops to normal, and the symptoms of polydipsia, polyuria, and olihidrosis gradually subside.

Treatment of heatstroke in infants and young children should focus on maintaining a cool and well-ventilated bedroom. Families with air conditioning can maintain the room temperature at 21-23℃. Those who can should change their environment and go to the mountains and countryside to escape the heat. The child's diet and cooling measures can be determined under the guidance of a pediatrician. It has been observed that the prognosis of heatstroke is good, and parents do not need to worry too much.
