Dietary therapy for hyperlipidemia

   Hyperlipidemia falls under the categories of phlegm syndrome, dizziness, palpitations, and chest tightness in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Its clinical characteristics include dizziness, chest tightness, elevated plasma lipids (triglycerides and cholesterol) on an empty stomach (some cases show no clinical symptoms), etc. Those with hyperlipidemia without complications usually have no subjective symptoms and are often discovered during routine health checkups.

  In addition to medication, diet therapy should not be overlooked in the treatment of hyperlipidemia. Below are several reliable dietary medicinal recipes for lowering blood lipids for your reference.

  Hawthorn Congee: 30-45g of hawthorn (or 60g of fresh hawthorn), 100g of japonica rice, and an appropriate amount of sugar. Boil the hawthorn to extract a thick juice, remove the residue, and cook it with the washed japonica rice. Add sugar when the congee is almost cooked, and simmer for a few boils. It can be served warm as a snack, once a day, for a 10-day course. This congee can lower blood pressure, promote bowel movements, lower blood lipids, and clear the liver and improve eyesight. Suitable for hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and habitual constipation.

  Chrysanthemum and Cassia Seed Congee: 10g of chrysanthemum, 10-15g of cassia seed, 50g of japonica rice, and an appropriate amount of rock sugar. First, stir-fry the cassia seed in a sand pot until slightly fragrant, remove, let cool, then boil with chrysanthemum to extract the juice, remove the residue, and add the japonica rice to cook the congee. When the congee is almost cooked, add rock sugar and simmer for a few boils before serving. Eating this congee can strengthen the spleen and stomach, aid digestion, and lower blood lipids. Suitable for hyperlipidemia, hypertension, coronary heart disease, and food stagnation, undigested meat.

  Black Bean Congee: 30g of black beans, 50g of japonica rice. Wash the black beans and japonica rice and put them in a pot together, add 500ml of water, bring to a boil over high heat, then reduce heat and simmer until cooked. It's best not to add oil, salt, or other seasonings. It can be eaten as a staple food in the morning and evening. Primarily treats hyperlipidemia and hyperlipidemia combined with atherosclerosis. Those with abdominal distension should only take it once a day.

  Garlic Pickled Vegetable Fish: 100g of single-head garlic, 100g of Sichuan pickled vegetables, 1 grass carp. Remove the gills and viscera of the grass carp and cut it into pieces; put the garlic and fish pieces in a pot, add the pickled vegetables, then add 10g each of cooking wine, ginger, and scallions, 2g of salt, and an appropriate amount of water, and cook until done. Eat the garlic, fish, and drink the soup. Primarily treats hyperlipidemia, especially hypercholesterolemia. Contraindicated for those with hyperuricemia and gout.

  Sweet Potato Fish Cake: 250g of sweet potato, 10g of flour, 50g of fish, and an appropriate amount of ginger and scallions. Wash the sweet potato, steam it until cooked, peel it, and mash it into a puree, then add the flour. Mince the cleaned fish, add 5g of soy sauce. Put 30ml of camellia oil or peanut oil in a pot, heat it, add 10g each of ginger and scallions and stir-fry until fragrant, then add the fish and stir-fry lightly to make the filling; mix the fish filling into the sweet potato and flour mixture, press it into cakes, and steam until cooked. Eat as a staple food for breakfast and dinner. This recipe has the effects of lowering blood lipids and promoting bowel movements. Primarily treats hypercholesterolemia with constipation. Note: those with gout should not eat it frequently.

  Winter Melon and Kelp Soup: 200g of winter melon, 50g of kelp. Wash the winter melon, remove the seeds, and cut it into pieces with the skin on; steam the kelp for half an hour, rub it with a little baking soda, then soak it in water for 2 hours, and cut it into strips; cook the winter melon pieces and kelp into a soup, add a little rice vinegar after cooking. Eat the winter melon and kelp and drink the soup. This recipe has the effects of lowering blood lipids and losing weight, especially lowering triglycerides. Primarily treats hypertriglyceridemia or those with obesity.

  Eggplant and Eel Stir-fry: 500g of purple eggplant, 250g of fresh eel, 100g of single-head garlic, 20g of olive oil, 10g each of scallions and ginger. Cut the eggplant into pieces; remove the bones and viscera of the eel and cut it into sections. Heat the pot, add olive oil and heat to six parts, add eggplant, eel, 10g of fermented soybean paste and 150ml of water, and cook until the eel is cooked and the garlic is soft. Add 5g of soy sauce and stir-fry until well combined. Serve as a side dish. This recipe has the effects of lowering blood lipids, lowering blood sugar, and preventing atherosclerosis. Effective for hyperlipidemia combined with hyperglycemia. Contraindicated for those with hyperuricemia.

  Wood Ear and Tofu: 6g of black wood ear, 200g of tofu, 5g of ginger, 5g of scallions, 1.5g of fine salt. Soak the black wood ear and remove impurities; put 15g of peanut oil in a pot, heat it, add ginger and scallions and stir-fry until fragrant, then add the black wood ear and stir-fry until well combined, add the tofu cubes, add salt, and boil over high heat for 5 minutes. Serve as a side dish. This recipe is effective in lowering triglycerides, and when paired with scallions and ginger, it also has the effect of promoting blood circulation and removing blood stasis, which can prevent the formation of blood clots. Primarily treats hypertriglyceridemia.

  Tangerine Peel and Job's Tears Congee: 6g of tangerine peel, 50g of Job's tears. Grind the tangerine peel into a fine powder, wash the Job's tears, add 1 large bowl of water to a pot, cook into a congee, then add the tangerine peel powder, and stir well. Eat as a staple food for breakfast and dinner. This recipe has the effect of lowering blood lipids and cholesterol. Effective for hyperlipidemia. Not suitable for frequent consumption by those who are thin.
