According to Lianhe Zaobao, eating kiwifruit (also known as Chinese gooseberries) before bed can improve sleep quality. This is the result of a survey conducted by Taipei Medical University on behalf of Zespri International (Asia) Ltd., a kiwifruit company. Professor Liu Zhenfang from the Department of Health and Nutrition at the university revealed at a press conference in Singapore that there has always been an online claim that eating kiwifruit is beneficial for sleep, so she decided to use scientific methods to verify this claim.

She surveyed 29 individuals with sleep disorders. The results showed that if those with sleep disorders ate two kiwifruits an hour before bed for a month, the time it took them to fall asleep after getting into bed was reduced by 39%. The time they woke up in the middle of the night was reduced by 43%, and their total sleep time increased by 14%.

She said: "Kiwifruit is rich in calcium, magnesium, and vitamin C, which help soothe the tense central nervous system. Calcium, in particular, has a calming effect on the nerves. Although these nutrients can be obtained from different foods, kiwifruit contains all three substances and is also low in calories, making it suitable for consumption before bed."

Professor Liu Zhenfang emphasized that for the effect to be achieved, patients must consume kiwifruit long-term. The study also showed that when the same group of patients only ate kiwifruit for four days, their sleep did not improve significantly. However, eating too many kiwifruits before bed may lead to indigestion, affecting sleep.
