Preventing Oral Ulcers in Autumn

As autumn arrives, more people are suffering from mouth ulcers. According to Dr. Huang, a specialist in mucosal research at Guangzhou Medical College's Yangcheng Stomatological Hospital, this is partly related to the season, but more importantly, it's linked to genetics, vitamin deficiencies, low immunity, and psychological factors. Recently, many hospitals have seen an increase in such patients, especially young and middle-aged adults, mostly due to insufficient sleep and stress.
During the autumn and winter seasons, when the wind is strong, the weather is dry, and conditions change frequently, the number of patients with sore throats and mouth ulcers seen at various hospitals increases by 10-20% on average.
The oral tissues are rich in nerves and blood vessels; even a small lesion feels like a volcanic eruption, causing great suffering to many patients. Xiaokong, already suffering from a sore throat due to autumn dryness, felt exhausted after a 24-hour shift and experienced severe mouth pain. Upon checking a mirror, he found a mouth ulcer. He immediately took some vitamin B2 and applied an ulcer patch, but the pain persisted.
According to doctors specializing in mucosal research, mouth ulcer patients are generally between 20 and 40 years old, with women being more commonly affected. This is also related to hormones. In addition, weather changes are a contributing factor to the increased incidence of mouth ulcers. Frequent changes in cold and dryness during autumn and winter make mouth ulcers more likely. During the changeable autumn and winter seasons, taking timely preventive and therapeutic measures is crucial to prevent and treat the frequent occurrence of mouth ulcers.
According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the susceptibility to mouth ulcers in autumn is a major manifestation of the invasion of cold and dryness leading to "heatiness." Mouth ulcers are an extreme symptom of external cold and dryness in autumn and winter, combined with internal damp-heat attacking the mouth.
TCM believes that mouth ulcers are often caused by rising heart fire, accumulation of heat in the stomach and intestines, and liver stagnation transforming into fire and inflammation in the throat. "Throat fire" clinically manifests as mouth ulcers, swollen and painful lips and tongue, and sore throat, with mouth ulcers being the most severe.
Due to the cold, dry, and changeable weather in autumn and winter, sometimes diet and clothing cannot fully adapt to the changes, disrupting the body's metabolic balance and stability. This causes the body's "chief administrator"—the brain, especially the thermoregulatory center—to malfunction and lead to "heatiness." Coupled with work stress and poor rest, this can easily cause canker sores and mouth ulcers. To prevent this, in addition to ensuring adequate rest, a light diet rich in fruits and vegetables to increase vitamin intake is recommended.
