On a cold winter's day, nothing is more warming and refreshing than a fragrant cup of rich coffee. Coffee shops during this season are always filled with friends and companions gathering; countless people with laptops are seen in Starbucks; and in supermarkets and in front of vending machines, people always pick up a can of coffee. In short, people of all kinds wait for the same good coffee every day.
Why are we so obsessed with coffee? In addition to its invigorating effects, the inherent cultural atmosphere of coffee is also a magical attraction. Some say, "You can smell the original coffee fragrance of their inspiration from the works of coffee-loving writers and artists." For hundreds of years, coffee has been changing history in the most silent and gentle way.
Speaking of history, we cannot fail to mention the great writer Balzac. Some say, "It was while drinking coffee that Balzac wrote so many masterpieces." But others say, "If he hadn't over-consumed coffee, Balzac could have contributed more and better works to the world." Is coffee a healthy drink that benefits our body and mind, or is it the culprit that harms our health? The medical community has been researching and exploring this, and in this issue, we have invited experts to give us some guidance.
They have no connection with coffee
1. Patients with hypertension: Coffee contains caffeine, which can raise blood pressure in some sensitive patients.
2. Patients with renal failure: Patients with renal failure who have hyperkalemia need to follow a potassium-restricted diet, and coffee has a high potassium content and should not be consumed.
3. Patients with peptic ulcers: Caffeine stimulates gastric acid secretion and causes relaxation of the smooth muscle blood vessels in the digestive system, accelerating food metabolism and reducing the nutritional value of food.
4. Patients with diabetes: Caffeine can reduce insulin secretion in the pancreas, reduce glucose tolerance, increase insulin excretion, and raise blood sugar.
5. Epilepsy patients: Caffeine can stimulate the brain motor center, and xanthine can cause vasoconstriction, reducing blood flow to the brain. This is very unfavorable for epilepsy patients.
6. Patients with heart disease: Coffee increases the content of fat and triglycerides, increasing the burden on the heart and oxygen consumption. Side effects are more likely to occur when the body is tired and smoking excessively.
7. Patients with iron deficiency anemia: Coffee accelerates food metabolism and reduces iron absorption.
8. Patients with kidney stones: To prevent the recurrence of calcium oxalate stones, foods rich in oxalic acid should be avoided, and coffee is a food rich in oxalic acid.
9. Insomniacs: Long-term consumption of coffee can affect sedation, increase the number of awakenings, and make sleep shallower.
10. In addition to the above patients who should not drink coffee, not all healthy people are suitable for drinking coffee, such as pregnant women and breastfeeding women: Caffeine can affect the fetus's nutrient and oxygen uptake, so pregnant women should best avoid caffeinated drinks. During breastfeeding, stimulants such as caffeine will enter the infant's body through breast milk, which can have adverse effects on the infant's growth and development, so do not drink coffee for three months after delivery.
Athletes may also experience discomfort or pathological phenomena when drinking coffee.
Misconceptions about drinking coffee
Coffee VS Sobering up
In the past, people believed that caffeine could promote liver and kidney function, so drinking coffee after drinking alcohol could promote the acidification of acetaldehyde formed from alcohol, breaking it down into sulfur dioxide and water, which helps to sober up.
However, recent studies have found that drinking coffee after drinking alcohol can induce hypertension. Some people are used to ordering a cup of coffee to sober up after drinking. Little do they know that mixing alcohol and coffee will aggravate the damage of alcohol to the body, and the risk is also very high.
After drinking alcohol, alcohol is quickly absorbed by the digestive system and then enters the circulatory system, affecting the gastrointestinal tract, heart, liver, kidneys, brain, and endocrine system, and leading to disorders in the metabolism of sugar, protein, and fat in the body. The brain is the most directly and severely affected. The main component of coffee, caffeine, has the effect of stimulating the central nervous system and muscles, and also accelerates metabolism.
Drinking coffee after drinking alcohol will cause the brain to switch from extreme inhibition to extreme excitement, stimulate vasodilation, accelerate blood circulation, greatly increase the burden on the cardiovascular system, and the damage to the body will be many times greater than simply drinking alcohol, and may even induce hypertension. Coupled with emotional excitement and tension, the risk will be even greater.
Even after drinking health-promoting wine, it is not suitable to drink coffee. Therefore, people who drink more than 50ml of white wine above 30 degrees should not drink coffee after drinking. People who have drunk a small amount of alcohol should drink no more than one cup (200ml) of coffee. Do not drink coffee within 30-60 minutes of drinking white wine and 1-3 hours of drinking wine.
Coffee VS Professional Women
A cigarette in the left hand and a cup of coffee in the right hand is the image of many OLs today. Studies have found that women should be more cautious when drinking coffee.
1. Easy to suffer from infertility: Although the direct cause of infertility in women cannot yet be found medically, it is currently believed that infertility may be related to caffeine.
2. Increased risk of myocardial infarction: Drinking 5 or more cups of coffee per day can increase the risk of myocardial infarction in women by 70%, and the risk increases with the amount of coffee consumed.
3. Easy to cause osteoporosis: Caffeine can combine with free calcium in the human body and be excreted in the urine. The reduction of free calcium will inevitably cause the decomposition of bound calcium, thus leading to osteoporosis.
4. Pregnant women drinking coffee is harmful to the fetus.
5. Aggravate pregnancy-induced hypertension: Pregnancy-induced hypertension is a disease unique to pregnant women, and patients show edema, hypertension, and proteinuria.
6. May cause diabetes: Studies in Finland and the United States, two of the highest coffee-consuming countries, have found that these countries also have the highest number of diabetes patients. Mothers who drink coffee may cause their babies to develop diabetes after birth.
Golden Rules for Coffee Consumption
Many people who drink large amounts of coffee for a long time are prone to "caffeine withdrawal." Caffeine is a stimulant, and if it is frequently consumed in excess, "caffeine withdrawal" will occur once it is stopped. Symptoms include: depression, limb pain, general weakness, anxiety, headache, and in severe cases, fever, influenza, and even feelings of pessimism and despair. Therefore, coffee should be consumed according to certain principles.
Quantity: The total daily intake of caffeine should not exceed 250 grams, which is equivalent to about 2 cups of coffee. The most direct symptom of excessive coffee consumption is palpitations (rapid heartbeat), and even dizziness and unsteady gait. After drinking four or five cups of coffee continuously, most people will feel nauseous. The health problems caused by excessive coffee consumption far outweigh its positive effects.
Time: Drinking coffee reduces appetite, so drinking coffee before meals will reduce appetite; because the stomach is stimulated, gastric juice secretion increases, stimulating the empty stomach, which is not good for patients with stomach ulcers. However, drinking coffee after meals increases gastric juice secretion, which helps digestion. Therefore, coffee is suitable for drinking after meals. Coffee is also not suitable for drinking before bed.
