Expert Tip: Improper air conditioner use leads to more patients with neck, spine, and leg pain

Information from Wuhan Zhongnan Hospital and Wuhan No. 9 Hospital indicates a significant increase in recent neck, back, and leg pain patients compared to usual levels. Some hospitals report double the number of patients compared to the pre-summer period. Experts attribute a significant portion of these cases to improper air conditioner use, particularly advising those with pre-existing neck, back, and leg problems to use air conditioning scientifically.
Meng Qingyuan, director of orthopedics at Wuhan No. 9 Hospital, explains that while their department usually sees fewer patients, there's been a gradual increase since summer, with all orthopedic beds recently fully occupied, some patients even staying in the corridors. Analysis reveals that these patients primarily suffer from neck, shoulder, back, and leg pain due to improper air conditioner use at home, a situation exacerbated by the recent muggy nights in Wuhan.
Meng Qingyuan notes that healthy individuals rarely experience pain from air conditioning. Patients experiencing neck, shoulder, back, and leg pain after air conditioning usually have pre-existing conditions, with improper air conditioner use triggering recurrences. Pre-existing injuries and resulting scar tissue reduce blood flow. When exposed to cold air conditioning, vasoconstriction occurs, leading to insufficient blood supply to the affected muscles and pain recurrence. Common affected areas include the neck, shoulders, back, and waist, especially for those with cervical spondylosis.
Meng Qingyuan advises that with the recent 'autumn tiger' heat wave in Wuhan, citizens should use air conditioning scientifically. Avoid setting the temperature too low or using it for extended periods. Direct airflow towards the waist, legs, shoulders, and neck should be avoided. When using air conditioning, don't seal the room completely; leave small gaps for air circulation. Cover yourself with a light blanket when sleeping to prevent localized chilling.
