Previously, many ophthalmic preparations lacked detailed explanations. Now, if you carefully read the instructions for each ophthalmic preparation before use, you will almost always find a note among the densely packed, fine print: "Ophthalmic preparations can be used for a maximum of 4 weeks after opening."

The "maximum 4-week use" rule is straightforward. Many instructions for ophthalmic preparations also include the note: "Avoid contact between the bottle opening and the eye, and tighten the cap after use to prevent contamination." This is because once opened, ophthalmic preparations are easily contaminated by tears and airborne microorganisms during use and storage, creating safety hazards. In fact, most ophthalmic preparations (including various antibiotic eye drops) contain preservatives during manufacturing. However, because preservatives themselves can affect eye tissue cells, exceeding a certain concentration can also damage eye tissue cells. Therefore, foreign countries are gradually shifting to producing single-use ophthalmic preparations to resolve this contradiction. Due to cost factors, domestic products ensure user safety by specifying a 4-week shelf life after opening.

Most eye diseases are treated with eye drops or ointments applied directly to the eye's surface. Therefore, the actual safe and effective time limit of ophthalmic preparations is crucial. However, even with the addition of the note "Ophthalmic preparations can be used for a maximum of 4 weeks after opening," it is often placed at the end of many instructions in the numerous ophthalmic preparation instructions. Coupled with the small print, it is difficult for patients with eye diseases to see it clearly. People often only look at the production batch number, production date, and expiration date on the product packaging, easily overlooking or being misled.

A random survey of customers purchasing eye drops conducted by a pharmaceutical sales department showed that less than 10% were aware of the "maximum 4-week use after opening" rule. Experts urge that such important notes concerning the health and safety of patients with eye diseases must be clearly marked on the outer packaging of all ophthalmic preparations. Medical departments should remind, and manufacturers have a responsibility to clearly indicate: expiration date ≠ use-by date.
