Do not massage casually after a fall.

　　 A few days ago, an elderly woman over seventy years old took her grandson out after a rain. As soon as they reached the entrance of their apartment complex, she fell. Thinking it was a simple sprain, she went to a nearby massage parlor hoping to alleviate the pain. Unexpectedly, the pain not only didn't lessen but worsened. A hospital examination revealed that she had compression fractures in two segments of her lumbar spine. Because of the delay, she missed the optimal treatment period, making treatment more difficult.

　　In daily life, many people, like this elderly woman, avoid seeking treatment at a regular hospital because they fear the time and effort involved, instead opting for nearby massage to solve the problem. However, falls can easily cause bone damage. If one mistakenly believes it's just a sprain or bruise and massages the injured area without a proper hospital check-up, it could worsen the injury, making treatment more difficult or causing the patient to miss the optimal treatment period. Therefore, in case of a fall, one should seek treatment at a regular hospital and pay special attention to:

　　1. If the injured area is severely painful, limb movement is restricted, there is significant tenderness in the affected area, swelling, discoloration, or even limb deformation, one should strongly suspect a spinal or limb fracture. The injured area must be immobilized on the spot, and a prompt check-up at the nearest regular hospital is necessary for timely diagnosis.

　　2. After confirming that it is not a fracture, cold water or ice packs can be applied to the affected area for 15 minutes to reduce swelling. Hot compresses and massage should not be applied within 48 hours of the injury.

　　3. Provided it is not a fracture, massage can be performed after 48 hours to promote blood circulation and relieve muscle tension.
