As the saying goes, "Eat radish in winter and ginger in summer; you won't need a doctor's prescription." Ginger is not only a condiment but also a good food for health preservation. Lei Min, a nutritionist at the Nutrition and Diet Department of Hebei Medical University's Third Hospital, introduces that while ginger doesn't contain as many vitamins and minerals as other vegetables, it's high in potassium and iron and rich in carbohydrates and dietary fiber.
The pungent components of ginger are zingerone and zingiberene, which can increase human metabolism and promote sweating. Drinking ginger soup when you first catch a cold can warm the body, promote sweating, and reduce fever. Ginger's anti-inflammatory and expectorant effects can alleviate cold symptoms. At the same time, ginger also has good therapeutic effects on cold symptoms and neuralgia.
Ginger can also promote gastric juice secretion and enhance digestion and absorption. Eating a few slices of ginger or adding some young ginger to dishes can improve appetite and increase food intake when appetite is poor or food intake is reduced, hence the saying, "If your food is unappetizing, eat ginger." The gingerol in ginger produces an antioxidant enzyme in the body; eating ginger can fight aging, and the elderly can often eat ginger to remove "age spots." In addition, adding some ginger powder or ginger juice when eating preserved eggs or aquatic products such as fish and crab can also play a role in detoxification and sterilization.
