A study published in the latest issue of the European Heart Journal found that adding milk to tea significantly reduces its health benefits.

Cardiologist Verena Stangl and researchers from Charité University Hospital in Berlin selected 16 healthy women. They were given either plain red tea, red tea with milk, or plain water to drink. Ultrasound was used to measure the forearm blood vessel dilation capacity of the participants before and two hours after drinking. The results showed that drinking red tea significantly increased vascular dilation capacity compared to drinking plain water, while milk completely negated this effect.

Researchers believe that catechins in red tea increase myocardial function and strengthen blood vessel elasticity, helping to prevent heart disease. However, a protein in milk called casein destroys catechins, thus reducing the health benefits of red tea. Compared to the West, where red tea is preferred, green tea consumption is a social custom in China and other Asian countries, and green tea contains even more catechins. This study did not involve green tea. The latest research results also explain why residents of countries like the UK, where red tea is commonly consumed with milk, have not seen a decrease in the incidence of heart disease and stroke.
