With the current spread of influenza A H1N1, causing public concern, more and more people in Beijing are wearing masks on the streets. On the 17th, Deng Ying, director of the Beijing Center for Disease Control and Prevention, stated that wearing a mask protects oneself and shows care for others, but only by wearing a mask correctly can the purpose of preventing influenza be achieved.
The main way that the influenza A H1N1 virus spreads from person to person is through respiratory droplets produced when talking, sneezing, or coughing. Anyone in close contact with someone exhibiting flu-like symptoms may be exposed to potentially infectious respiratory droplets and should therefore wear a mask correctly.
"Wearing a mask for a long time is not only uncomfortable but also unnecessary." Deng Ying said that it is often seen that some people wear masks while walking alone on open streets, which is meaningless from the perspective of preventing the spread of disease. During the current flu season, he suggests that citizens wear masks in the following situations: when visiting a fever clinic at the hospital, either alone or accompanying a family member; when caring for a mild case of influenza A H1N1 or other respiratory infectious patients at home; when a mild flu patient goes out and is in close contact with others; and when taking public transportation such as buses and subways.
According to Deng Ying, the disposable masks commonly available at pharmacies are ordinary surgical masks. Before wearing them, wash your hands to avoid contaminating the inside of the mask. After putting on the mask, use both hands to pull the pleats of the mask up and down to completely cover the mouth, nose, and chin. Then, use your fingers to press firmly on the metal strip on both sides of the bridge of the nose to ensure the top of the mask fits snugly against the bridge of the nose. This will provide better protection.
